“Ain’t No Sunshine” with cellist Jacob Barker

Classically trained cellist Jacob Barker will perform classical and modern soulful songs by BIPOC artists, such as Bill Withers and Bob Marley, in a program about liberation.

Originally from Austin, Texas, Jacob Barker is a cellist and teacher based in Evanston, Illinois. As an orchestral musician, Jacob has played in the cello sections of the West Valley Symphony, Symphony of the Southwest, and the Arizona State University Symphony. While attending ASU, he was the cellist of the Arizona Contemporary Music Ensemble, a Pierrot ensemble that premiers many new works by modern composers each season. He is involved with new music projects in both Phoenix and Austin, including the Oh My Ears Music Festival and Density512. He also played the role of a cellist in Phoenix Theatre Company’s mainstage production of Once: A New Musical, a production that required him to act and sing while performing on his primary instrument. Jacob is currently a graduate student of Hans Jensen at Northwestern University, and formerly studied with Tom Landschoot at ASU. He has attended the Taconic Chamber Music Festival, Castleman Quartet Program, the Lev Aronson Cello Festival, Aria International Summer Academy, the Red Rocks Chamber Music Institute, and the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival.
